In
2000 a group of performers and technicians, in colaboration with 'Clowns
without Frontiers' and under the original name of Nets i Polits, joined
together to create the show NO
ES POT PASSAR (You Cannot Pass). This was a clown show
for children that told the story of three refugees looking for a home,
and explored some of the absurdities relating to frontiers and burocracy.
This show was presented in festivals, theatres and the open-air in
Catalunya, the Basque Country, Andorra and Madrid. In 2001 this group
also performed in South America in streets, schools and refugee camps
of Guatemala in a project called ‘Children of the Street’.
On the 1st January 2002 the company was officially registered in Barcelona
under the new name of ClownFish. |

The second show, A
MI QUE! (So What!), created for the charity S.O.S.
Racism, was a comic look at different types of racism in the context
of a parody of a TV gameshow. It premiered in the Festival of Diversity
in Barcelona in 2002. At the same time the group started performing
JOC & ROLL, a more
loosely structured entertainment for children featuring music, stories,
circus numbers and lots of participation, with a flexible team of
between 2 to 5 performers.
|
| The
following year the company moved into a shop in the Sants area of
Barcelona with space for an office, rehearsal room, scenery building
area and storage of scenery, costumes and technical equipment. Also
the structure of the company changed to the smaller, administrative
group of Betu, Chris and Tony with a large group of associated artists
and technicians who could be called upon for the various projects
and shows. CLOWNFISHTEC
was created as a sub-division providing technical expertise and equipment
to other theatre companies. |
| TIRA
TIRA, the Band Factory, premiered in April 2003. A childrens
show denouncing child exploitation with puppets and an actor; a co-production
with the company ‘Tr3s i pro1’ which provided the direction and prize
winning script. This was followed by the adult cabaret TROSSOS
(Pieces) in which the ficticious comic sketches were all loosely based
on real stories of discrimination. |
| At
the same time Betu was developing two solo presentations; the street
show THE HUMAN CANNONBALL
which premiered in the Festival of Tarraga and THE
COLOURS OF EUROPE, a clown lecture created for the Office
of the European Parliament in Barcelona. |
| ClownFishTec
has provided technicians, scenery and tecnical designs for various
companies including; Opera Mobile (opera), The Chanclettes (cabaret),
Lisboa Zentral Café (portable open-air‘gazebo’ with music),
Res de Res en Blanc (circus theatre), Lluís Llach (music),
Opera in the University (for the Conservatory of the Liceu), Cia.
Roberto G. Alonso (modern dance) and Acte 4 (amateur theatre). |
| During
the summer of 2004, ClownFish produced Montando Pollos (Fucking Chickens)
with JANGO EDWARDS as
director. Through castings, workshops and rehearsals, five different
open air animations were developed for a group of 20 actors, that
were presented daily during one month at the Barcelona Forum 2004.
From this begining was born THE
FOOLS MILITIA, large scale street and theatre events
with a team of between 10 to 30 actors, often from all over Europe.
THE AIR ORCHESTRA, one
of the original presentations, developed into a cabaret theatre spectacular
and also spawned new companies in similar clown, comedy sketch style
such as LAS PESTAÑAS
and LAS GALLEGAS. |
| Alongside
large scale productions of the Fools Militia, 2005 and 2006 also saw
the creation of AUCA,
a solo show in Catalan with Lola López presenting traditional
stories for children, TO THE
CIRCUS performed by Betu and Jordi Gómez and
SITICLAUN, Betu´s solo show for adults
about a tramp clown living on the streets of the metropolis. |
